Pesto Stuffed Star Bread is a fun appetizer for NYE! Yeast dough stuffed with pesto, artichoke, Parmesan cheese & Romano cheese.
For this Pesto Star Bread recipe you'll need: flour, yeast, eggs, salt, sugar, butter, pesto, Parmesan cheese and Romano cheese.
Warm milk to 115°F then whisk in sugar. Sprinkle yeast over the top, cover with a kitchen towel and let sit for 10-15 minutes.. Yeast will be frothy.
Add butter, egg, salt and flour. Knead dough on low for 3 -5 minutes until dough is smooth and soft but not too sticky.
Form dough into a ball then place into a greased bowl. Cover bowl with a kitchen towel and place in a warm spot for 1 hour. Dough will double in size.
Divide dough into 4 equal parts. Roll each piece out to a 10-12 inch circle. You will add filling to 3 of the 4 layers as you stack them.
Spread pesto, chopped artichokes, Parmesan cheese and Romano cheese on first layer.
Add a new layer of dough over the top then repeat process. Pesto Star Bread ends with the 4th and top layer, without any filling on that layer.
Use a pizza cutter to trim edges of Pesto Star Bread to make an even circle. Place an object with a 3-inch round diameter in the center of the dough.
Using a pizza cutter, cut up the center, avoiding the middle circle then through the center the opposite direction. Continue making cuts until you have 16 pieces.
Take 2 pieces of dough next to each other then twist each piece 3 times. Press the bottom of the two pieces together to form a point.
Brush Pesto Star Bread with egg wash then bake at 350°F for 20-25 minutes. Top with more Parmesan cheese then serve warm.
