It’s that time of year again! Pumpkin spice season. So why not switch it up and make a pumpkin spice cocktail?!

This simple recipe is surprisingly delicious! I love most things pumpkin spice and I also love tequila but wasn’t sure how I felt about mixing the two.

I’m glad I did because now I have a delicious drink for Friendsgiving, Halloween parties, Thanksgiving and all other fall festivities!

One of my other favorite fall cocktails is Bourbon Apple Cider Cocktail. We enjoy this cocktail throughout the holiday season and remainder of winter as well.

Why you’ll love this recipe

  • Easy – This recipe is super simple and easy. It’s easy to whip up a single serving or a whole batch!
  • Fun For Parties – Pumpkin Spice Margaritas are so fun for parties! Use them for a Halloween party, Friendsgiving, Thanksgiving or whatever fall themed parties you have coming up.
  • Delicious – These babies are surprisingly tasty. The citrus and spice flavors go so well with tequila!

Ingredients for Pumpkin Spice Margarita

  • Tequila – Use your favorite tequila! Remember, great quality tequila will make a great drink. You can use a blanco or reposado for this margarita. My go-to tequilas are Casamigos Blanco Tequila, Casamigos Reposado Tequila, Don Julio Blanco Tequila or Don Julio Reposado Tequila.
  • Pumpkin Butter – Pumpkin Butter is a spread made of pumpkin puree, sugars, spices and potentially apple cider. You can find it at your local grocery store and most certainly online.
  • Lime Juice – Fresh lime juice is essential for this recipe. Lime juice concentrate will not be the same.
  • Orange Juice – Fresh orange juice squeezed right from an orange gives the best flavor for the Pumpkin Spice Margarita.
  • Simple Syrup – This is equal parts water and sugar heated over the stove top until the sugar dissolves. You can use store bought or make your own.
  • Pumpkin Spice – Pumpkin Pie Spice is a pre-mixed spice blend that you can find at almost any grocery store.
  • Kosher Salt – I like to mix a little salt into the spiced rim.
  • Cinnamon Stick (optional) – If you want to get cute, garnish the Pumpkin Spice Margarita with a cinnamon stick.
  • Lime Wedge (optional) – Garnish the cocktail with a lime wedge if you like.
Casamigos reposado tequila, oranges, limes, simple syrup, pumpkin spice with salt on a plate and a jar of pumpkin butter.

Equipment needed

  • Cocktail Shaker – This is a shaken cocktail so use your shaker if you have one. If you don’t have one then just use a mason jar with a lid!
  • Rocks Glasses – I serve Pumpkin Spice Margaritas in small rocks glasses rather than a margarita glass. That is just personal preference, serve them in whatever type of glass you have!
  • Jigger – Using a jigger to measure amounts is the easiest route to go.
  • Sharp Knife – You’ll need a sharp knife to cut the oranges and limes for the fruit juices.

Expert tips

  • Don’t have a cocktail shaker? Use a mason jar with a lid!
  • Use good quality tequila! Don Julio and Casamigos Tequila are both great choices for any tequila cocktail.
  • You can use brown sugar in addition or instead of the salt on the rim. You can also do a plain salt rim, a plain sugar rim or just leave the seasoning off the rim all together.
  • Make these for your next fall themed party!
  • This Pumpkin Spice Margarita recipe can be made in large batches too! Just multiply the ingredients by the number of drinks you want, mix well and store in a large container so it’s ready to go.

Storage

If you make a large batch of Pumpkin Spice Margarita and want to store it then you can keep it in the fridge for up to 5 days in an airtight container.

A pitcher or glass tea jar works well. Give it a good shake before serving it.

Substitutions

  • Orange Liqueur – You can substitute orange liqueur for the fresh orange juice if you like. Cointreau or Triple Sec will work just fine.
  • Agave Syrup – You can substitute agave syrup for the simple syrup.
  • Brown Sugar – Use brown sugar instead of salt for the rim if you prefer a sweeter cocktail over a salty cocktail.

FAQ’s

What kind of tequila should I use for a margarita?

The best tequila to use for a margarita is a good quality, smooth tasting tequila. Typically I use a Blanco for margaritas but in the case of this Pumpkin Spice Margarita, I think Blanco or Reposado is delicious.

My two favorite tequilas are Don Julio and Casamigos tequila.

Can I make Pumpkin Spice Margaritas for a crowd?

Yes, you most certainly can! Just multiply the recipe by the number of drinks you want to make then combine it in a large container that you can easily shake or stir and store in the fridge.

After mixing the Pumpkin Spice Margarita mix then secure the lid tightly so that it’s airtight and store it in the fridge for up to 5 days. Give it a good shake or stir before serving.

What does “margarita” mean in Spanish?

Margarita is a Spanish word meaning “daisy flower” in English.

Where did the margarita originate?

The answer to this is a little more difficult than you may think. There are numerous claims to who created the first margarita and when.

One of the earliest claims is from Carlos “Danny” Herrera. He was making a drink for Marjorie King similar to a tequila shot but more refreshing (via tasting table).

There is another claim that predates this by an Irishman named Madden. In 1936 was the first mention of the drink in a newspaper.

One thing is for sure, whoever created it created a delicious tequila drink that would be enjoyed for decades to come!
